Morgan Riddle confessed on TikTok that she’s still “mortified” by how she met her boyfriend, U.S. Open finalist Taylor Fritz. The couple, often compared to ‘Posh and Becks,’ connected during the pandemic in 2020 via the celebrity dating app Raya.
With the Covid-19 pandemic shutting down traditional date spots, Fritz, 26, invited Riddle, 27, to his place for a movie night. However, their choice of film was far from typical first-date material.
“I made him watch Midsommar with me, the really messed up horror movie,” Riddle shared, acknowledging it might not have been the best first impression. “Why I chose that as my first introduction to a guy, I don’t really know. I think I traumatised him a little bit.”
Despite the unconventional start, the relationship between the tennis star and the social media influencer flourished. Riddle, known for her vlogs and “day in the life” videos, boasts hundreds of thousands of followers across YouTube and TikTok.
The pair also featured in Netflix’s series ‘Break Point,’ which follows tennis pros at Grand Slam events. In one of her viral moments, Riddle expressed her desire to make “tennis cool again.”
During the episode, she controversially described tennis as “relatively uncool and unknown in America”, sparking a wave of online criticism. However, Taylor defended her during a 2022 press conference, stating: “I think what she did was awesome for our sport. It got a ton of people looking at it,” he said.
“I think you get your typical older fan who may be upset about it. I don’t understand how anyone can get upset about it. I’m the one that’s a professional tennis player, I’m the one that does this for a living. I 100 percent agree with everything in that video.”
Riddle has been spotted cheering on Fritz from the sidelines during his U.S. Open matches over the past few weeks. The American is set to face World No.1 Jannick Sinner in Sunday’s final, and a win would secure his first ever Grand Slam title. This would also mark the first Grand Slam victory for an American man since Andy Roddick’s triumph at the U.S. Open in 2003.
Before the tournament, the current World No. 12 had never advanced beyond the quarter-finals of a major, having been eliminated in the last eight four times consecutively – and three times in the past year.
After breezing through the first three rounds with straight sets victories, Fritz encountered his first significant challenge in the fourth round against World No. 8 Casper Ruud.
Despite an initial setback, he managed to overcome the Norwegian in a four-set match. The Californian then clinched a decisive victory over fourth seed Alexander Zverev, before squaring off against fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the semi-finals.
Fritz emerged victorious from a gruelling five-set showdown, making history as the first American man to reach the US Open final since Roddick in 2006. However, his final adversary, Sinner, is set to be his most formidable challenge yet.
The 23 year old Italian has lost only two sets throughout the tournament and has been on a winning streak all year. He claimed victory at the Australian Open, made it to the semi-finals of the French, and has held the World No.1 spot since June.
